Common questions about studying in India as an international student.
There are three main routes: applying directly on a university's official website, applying through the Government of India's Study in India portal (studyinindia.gov.in), or qualifying through a national entrance exam such as NEET (medicine), JEE (engineering), or CUET. Many universities accept direct international applications with no entrance exam.
It depends on the course. Professional programmes like MBBS (NEET) and engineering at IITs/NITs (JEE) require entrance exams, but a large number of universities offer direct admission to international students based on previous academic marks, especially for undergraduate arts, science, commerce, and management courses.
Typically you need your passport, academic transcripts and certificates (often attested), proof of English proficiency or medium of instruction, passport-size photographs, and a statement of purpose. After selection you receive an admission/offer letter, which you use to apply for a student visa.
India is one of the most affordable study destinations. Tuition commonly ranges from about USD 2,000 to USD 6,000 per year for most programmes (professional and private courses can be higher), and living costs are low compared with Western countries. Yes. Study in India (studyinindia.gov.in) is a Government of India initiative that lets international students discover participating institutions and apply, often with fee waivers and scholarships for eligible students.
Begin 6 to 12 months before your intended start date. The main intake is around July–August, with a smaller January intake at some universities. Starting early gives you time for entrance exams (if needed), document attestation, and the student visa process.
